IMIX, a not-for-profit migration communications hub offers a range of training and support for groups and organisations working with and for refugees and migrants, and people who are seeking asylum and migrants.

Core to our vision is to shift public attitudes around migration; all our training and support is underpinned by research on public perceptions of migration. We believe that together we can change the narrative.

We understand that you are busy, and that often communications is the last thing on your mind, so we have created a range of tools to help you promote your work and challenge negative narratives around migration.

Training

All of our training can be tailored to your needs and we are happy to run these courses anywhere in the UK, all we ask is that you provide a room and a projector – and if this isn’t possible, let us know and we’ll help!

Introduction to the media

For groups and organisations which have a great story to tell, just not sure how to get the message across, this half day training course is for you.  The course, which can be run for up to 25 people, covers

  • What makes a story & how to approach journalists
  • Informed consent and how to support experts by experience to engage with media
How to draft a press releases and putting our learning into practice
  • How to do a media interview

This course can be run online or in person.

Audience insight

Aimed at groups and organisations which are already doing great communications but want to understand how to target audiences to improve fundraising, campaigning and advocacy. This session takes three hours and can be run for up to 25 people. The session will help you understand:

  • What different population groups think of migration
  • What sort of messages resonate with different groups
  • Who is the best messenger to make the case
  • How to target different groups

This session can be tailored to meet your communications needs and can be run online or in person.

Messaging workshops

If you need help creating messages for your next campaign, we can help. These are bespoke workshops tailored to your needs, over two hours we will help you:

  • Create a ‘message house’ for your campaign
  • Support you to identify the best messengers and spokespeople
  • Think about what else you need to do to win your campaign

Due to the collaborative nature of these workshops, we prefer to run these face to face.

Costs for training are currently covered by the grants which we receive from our funders.

Practical support

In addition to training we also offer one to one and bespoke support. This can include working with you strategically to think through your communication needs, to delivering basic media support such as sending out your press releases and everything in between.

In the past we have helped One Day Without Us manage their press activity on days of action; supported Refugee Week by acting as media secretariat and pushed out reports for APPGs.

Toolkits

We know that it can be hard to make time for training so we have created some tool kits to help you better understand how to get your message across in the media and via digital. These are free to download from our website and can be shared with anyone working in our sector. We are going to produce more information and toolkits to help you communicate better, please do share any thoughts on what we should focus on.
